The House

The Georgian house at the head of the eighteenth was built in 1784 and has been the clubhouse since 1897. Members lunch, stay and read here, and bring their guests.

The Long Room

It runs the length of the garden front, eleven sash windows above the eighteenth green. Lunch is served every day of the year but Christmas, dinner on Friday and Saturday.

Eight rooms for the night

Members and their guests stay in the House before an early round or after a long dinner. A member books the room; the guest is made welcome.

On the first floor of the garden front, the two largest bedrooms look straight down the eighteenth fairway to the lime avenue. Each has a king-size bed, a bath beneath the window and a fire laid in winter.

On the east side above the walled garden, where the mornings are quiet and the light comes early. Two are made up with twin beds that can be joined.

Across the yard in the old stable block, each with its own front door, a minute from the changing rooms and the first tee. The golfers’ choice for an early start.

The Library and the rest

The House is run for members who come to play golf and stay for the afternoon. A few rooms, kept the way members like them.

The Library
Newspapers, the club’s minute books since 1897 and the best chairs in the House. It is a quiet room: no telephones, and no business papers on the table.
The Card Room
Bridge on Tuesday afternoons and backgammon most evenings. Members may reserve the table through the House office.
The Hall
Where members meet before a round, and the only place indoors where a telephone call is taken.
The changing rooms
Lockers for every member, showers, a shoe-cleaning bench by the door and a drying room that has everything dry by the time lunch is over.

Members may take a room for a lunch, a dinner or a celebration of their own. The kitchen writes the menu with you.

Lunch or dinner, any day

Stone floors, citrus trees in tubs and tall doors onto the south lawn. One long table for twenty-four, or rounds for a summer lunch that spills outside.

The panelled room off the hall, with the fire lit and the club’s old course plans on the walls. A single table for ten, served by one waiter all evening.

For members’ celebrations: a birthday, an anniversary, a wedding party after the church at Wadhurst. The whole room, laid as you would like it, on Sunday evenings once lunch has cleared.
