Membership

Averleigh keeps its membership near 340. Members come by introduction: proposed and seconded, met over a round and a lunch, and elected by the committee.

From proposal to election

There is no application form and no interview. A candidate is introduced by members, meets the club on the course and at the table, and is elected by the committee.

Proposed

To begin

Every new member is proposed by a member of at least five years’ standing who knows them well, and seconded by a second member who knows them both. The proposer writes to the Secretary. There is no application form for the candidate to fill in.

If you would like to be considered and do not yet know a member, write to the Secretary all the same. She meets a number of people each year who come to the club this way.

Played

Usually within two months

Two members of the committee will ask you for an afternoon round, with your proposer making the four. It is a round of golf, not an examination: they would like to see how you go about the game, keep pace and look after the course.

Lunch

The same day, or soon after

You then have lunch with the Secretary in the Long Room. She talks through the categories, the subscriptions and how the House runs, and answers anything you would rather not ask a member.

Elected

At the quarterly meeting

The committee meets four times a year and considers each candidate on the letters and on what its members have seen. The Secretary writes to you, and to your proposer, after any meeting at which your name is discussed.

The club keeps its membership near 340, so most candidates are elected to a list. It is usually around eighteen months from election to joining.

The course, seven days a week
From first light to dusk, every day it is open. Visitors play only on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and only by arrangement.
Two-ball priority
Two-balls have the run of the course and a round takes a little over three hours. Threes and fours call them through.

The first tee is kept for foursomes until ten. Put your name on the sheet by Saturday and the Secretary’s office makes up the pairings.
The House
Lunch in the Long Room every day, dinner on Friday and Saturday, the Library, and eight bedrooms at members’ rates.
Reciprocal clubs
A small number of private clubs in Britain and abroad receive Averleigh members as their own, on a letter from the Secretary.
Guests
Members may introduce up to three guests at a time, at the member’s guest rate. The rate is £120 a round from April to October and £85 in winter.
